Matt Cutts has publicized the release of Penguin 2.1, October 4th. This update has undeniably left a path of destruction across both large and small websites from around the globe.

A Peek behind the Curtains

This post will enlighten you about the tale of the 3 penguin victims. It will focus on three different sites that experienced three different outcomes. There is a website that recovered during Penguin 2.1. The other was hit harder by the 2.1 than the first one which was the Penguin 2.0. The last story represents an all-too common example of a company that does not get a good idea of how its SEO campaigns are doing and was blindsided by the release of this web-changing Penguin 2.1.

1. A Story of Recovery

There may be a lot of people that do not believe that websites can recover from the damaging Penguin. But you will certainly get surprised to know that some websites can rise up.
During the freshest update, there was two websites that hit recovered. While the analysis of the site’s reporting, a distinct bump in Google organic traffic started last 4th of October and continues to increase during the weekend. This was a client that has been dealing with many issues, being hit by both Panda and Penguin. This is a natural scenario for a number of companies now. This company, to be specific has been guided in the identification of technical problems and link building issues.
Based on the links that are downloaded from Google Webmaster Tools, Majestic SEO, and Open Site Explorer, the company tackled its unnatural link situation and presently needs another algorithm update. The site kept on producing great content and building natural links. The good thing is that the filter had been lifted and the site was rewarded for its recovery.

2. Combination Punch

The second story talks about an unfortunate one-two punch. The worst thing about it is that the incident happened after thinking they have addressed their unnatural link problem after the Penguin 2.0 in the best way they can, only to be disappointed by the outcome brought by the new Penguin 2.1. It resulted worse than the first dilemma.

3. A Fresh Fit with a “Trusted” Third Party

The case talks about a company that does not know how his SEO agency has been doing. It end up that the business owner was left trying to clean up the Penguin mess.

Lesson:

While Penguin 2.1 is worth than the 2.0, it is important to note that some websites have the possibility to recover with some serious hard work. If you’ve been impacted by Penguin 2.1, you have to download and analyze your inbound links, flag unnatural links, eliminate as many as you can manually, and then disown what you can’t remove.
